Episode 2: Navigating Communication & Neurodivergence

Hey folks, welcome back to “Living Without a Script,” the blog adaptation from your favorite podcast hosts, Candice and Gene. We’re a funky neurodivergent pair hailing from New Jersey, and today we’re diving into how communication plays out in our partnership. Buckle up as we share insights about the ups, downs, and all-arounds of keeping our relationship spicy and understanding in this whirlwind world of neurodivergence.

What is Neuro-Spicy?

Before we get too deep, let’s clarify something. If you’ve ever scratched your head wondering what “neuro-spicy” is, you’re not alone. It’s our playful term to describe those of us who fall under the neurodivergent spectrum—think autism, ADHD, and more. It’s our way of embracing our unique traits without taking things too seriously. It’s all about owning who we are!

Challenges in Communication

Contrary to what you might think, communication isn’t always easy for us. Interruptions, misunderstandings, and the challenges of being an enthusiastic neurodivergent can be overwhelming. We’ve been learning and unlearning how to communicate effectively, realizing it’s a skill that’s constantly evolving.

Candice points out how ADHD can make it tough not to interrupt, while Gene shares his struggle with letting enthusiasm take the wheel at inopportune moments. We remind each other: communication is a lifelong skill, one where even so-called “neurotypical” folks don’t have all the answers.

Childhood & Learning to Communicate

Growing up in families where communication wasn’t a strong suit is challenging. As kids, we picked up habits that weren’t always helpful. Whether it was acting a part or trying to copy others without full understanding, it led to more questions than answers.

Both of us come from backgrounds where talking led to arguments or feelings of inadequacy. It’s taken a lot of therapy, patience, and mutual support to unravel those threads and learn new patterns. Sometimes we pick up a journal and write things down or, thanks to Gene’s suggestion, have “standup meetings.” Think of it like a couple’s check-in but less daunting and more open.

Tips for Listeners

We want to pass on some of the strategies that have worked for us. Take a step back when communication feels hard. Reflect on the moment. What was it that triggered the emotions—tone, environment, or perhaps something else? It’s okay to pause and revisit later. Also, it’s important to remember: communication isn’t about being right or wrong. It’s about understanding each other.

Sharing & Learning Together

We’d love to hear how you navigate communication challenges, whether you’re neuro-spicy or just trying to understand better. Your tips and experiences could offer new perspectives. Let us know what resonates with you—your feedback might just help us and others in this vibrant community.

Remember, communication is a journey, not a destination. Thanks for joining us on this part of it!
